Of the things we think, say or do: 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?”

By building your team's self-esteem and encouraging them, the entire team becomes stronger.

Program - The Rotary Foundation

We were honored to have Roger McGonegal, Past District 5320 Governor, 2008-09.

Roger is a native of suburban New York who spent his early summers working at a small resort hotel owned by his family in western Connecticut. He is a graduate of Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration, and began his career at The Plaza Hotel in New York. Three years later, he was promoted to The Royal Orleans Hotel in New Orleans, and subsequently to Houston’s Whitehall Hotel. Recruited by a Dallas developer, he was named General Manager of a regional mall in Tyler, TX, where he was joined his first Rotary Club.

Subsequent opportunities brought him back to New York to work for Corporate Property Investors, a REIT specializing in regional malls. First he returned to Long Island, and then to Boston. In five years, two more Rotary Clubs.

In 1983, Roger opened CPI’s Western Regional Office in Orange County, where he joined the Westminster-Midway City Rotary. Within a year, the region expanded and, to meet travel requirements, he resigned from Rotary. In 1994, the portfolio was sold. Roger left the corporate world to pursue an entrepreneurial dream. He opened a kiosk at Fashion Island where he sold beach chairs and hammocks for seven years.

It was during this time that he joined Newport-Balboa Rotary, where he became active in various events and committees, including the nascent “Reading by 9” program. He served as Club President in 2002-2003, after being recognized for his Community Service work in two separate years, and as Rotarian of the Year twice. He was also the recipient of the Four Avenues of Service Citation from Rotary International.

From 2001 to 2004, Roger chaired the “Reading by 9” program at the District level. He served as an Assistant Governor in 2003-4, Assistant to the Governor in 2004-5, and is currently Executive Assistant to the Governor. In addition, he serves as Fleet Commodore of Newport Harbor Fleet of the International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians. A Director of the Newport Beach Sister City Association, he visited Okazaki, Japan as a Delegate for the celebration of the 20th Anniversary of that relationship in 2004.

Roger and his wife Sheila reside in Newport Beach. Sheila is a partner of The Busch Firm, an Irvine law firm, that specializes in estate planning and real estate. They enjoy travel to the mountains of Colorado in any season and have made regular visits to the New Orleans Jazz Festival. They have attended Rotary International Conventions in Barcelona and Chicago, and both are Multiple Paul Harris Fellows, Benefactors, and Members of the Bequest Society. Roger and Sheila are both avid readers, and appreciate the critical role that literacy plays in everyday life. Literacy will be a major focus in Rotary Year 2008-2009 in District 5320.
