Welcome to the Global Kalinga e-Rotary Club for the week of Sunday, November 29 through Saturday December 5, 2015. We are an Internet based Rotary Club based in Quezon City, Philippines with core groups of members in Southern California and elsewhere. We serve our local and nearby communities as well as projects in the Philippines.
Inspiration
"The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don't play together, the club won't be worth a dime." ~ Babe Ruth.
We have an outstanding group of individual members and we will be bringing in new members soon. To retain members, we need to bring them into the fold and work as a team. Let's make this a World Class Club.
Rotary 4-Way Test
Of the things we think, say or do: 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?”
By building your team's self-esteem and encouraging them, the entire team becomes stronger.
Bonifacio Day

Monday, November 30, is Bonifacio Day (“Kaarawan ni Bonifacio” in Tagalog), a national public holiday in the Philippines that celebrates the birthday of one of the Philippines’ greatest heroes, Andrés Bonifacio. In lieu of a sing-along, we decided to give a little history of Bonifacio, especially since our World Class Club President, Celly Adamo lived much of her early years in Caloocan, near the Bonifacio Monument
"Born in 30 November 1863, Bonifacio is considered as the Father of the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonisation. He, along with some others, started a movement known as the ‘Katipunan’ in 1892. The Katipunan was a secret revolutionary society that instigated military revolts against the Spanish colonisers.
Bonifacio became the Katipunan’s military leader and the president of the revolutionary government, which (according to some historians) makes Bonifacio the first president of the Philippine Republic. Bonifacio and the Katipunan recruited many citizens to their cause, eventually becoming the most prominent revolutionary force the Spaniards had to face.
However Bonifacio’s leadership was contested by some others, and in particular, Emilio Aguinaldo. After a series of leadership challenges and internal rifts, Aguinaldo violently took over the revolutionary forces and unjustly ordered Bonifacio to be tried and executed under the guise of treason.
Bonifacio Day is held on 30 November, or the Monday nearest this day to create a long weekend. Unlike the main national hero, José Rizal, Bonifacio Day is celebrated on his day of birth, rather than his day of death. This is because Bonifacio was killed by his fellow countrymen, rather than at the hands of foreign colonisers."
Fine Master
Traditionally, Rotary clubs have Fine Masters who are responsibile for collecting fines/happy dollars. The clipart to your left is our e-club Fine Master. Do you have happy dollars, a birthday, an anniversary, a promotion, opening a new business, new car, new child, new grandchild, etc. Please feel free (and perhaps obligated) to click on our Rotary FineMaster.
The minimum fine is $3.00 to ensure a sufficient amount to warrant a net fine after establishing the PayPal fee. The purpose of the fines can be viewed by clicking on [View Fines/Happy Dollars] on the dropdown menu from the [Weekly Meetings] main menu
Meeting/Program
Rather than having a presentation at our Monthly General Meeting, we had a Club Assembly where we discussed the progress and the future of our e-club. There has been some possible misunderstanding of an e-club. The video on the right is a short video highlighting the purpose of an e-club.
After the Call to Order by our President, Celly Adamo, Art Azarcon gave the invocation, Rillea Pax lead us in the Pledge and Frank Adamo lead us in the 4-Way Test. Rillea discussed the Treasurer's report and our president discussed her views of the club's activities.
We reviewed the success of our Vocational Service project at Valencia High School. All presenters did well; however, telecommunications and accounting were evaluated of the least relevant and interesting of the topics presented to the students. We also discussed our target audience. We gave the presentations to freshmen students who may not even have any thoughts of what they want to do after high school. There were less than a handful of students who were very interested in our discussions. Most others were attentive, though not really interested. Perhaps we should be targeting juniors and seniors who have likely considered and are more definable in their future work interests. Perhaps topics on communication skills, building self confidence, how to build relationships, how to retreat from confrontations, etc. may be more appropriate for freshmen students. We may also consider having another similar project sometime in April or May.
We also reminded members of the Cascades event on the 25th. We also reconfirmed our next Monthly Meeting will be a potluck on Friday, December 18, at the Delfin's. After our meeting, we can stroll around Delfin's neighborhood to see the Christmas lights.
During the board meeting, Rene Fruto gave his presentation on Membership Retention. Click on the PDF icon to the right to view the document. According the our ByLaws, Article 10 Method of Electing Members states:
Section 1 — A member shall provide a candidate’s name to the Board. A transferring or former member of another club may also be proposed for membership by the former club. The proposal is kept confidential unless the Board instructs otherwise.
Section 2 — The Board shall ensure that the candidate meets all of Rotary’s membership requirements.
Section 3 — The Board shall approve or reject the candidate’s membership within 30 days and shall notify the proposer of its decision.
Section 4 — If the decision of the Board is favorable, the prospective member is invited to join the club, educated about Rotary and membership requirements, and asked to sign the membership proposal form and to allow his or her name and proposed classification to be conveyed to the club.
Section 5 — If no member of the club submits a written objection including reasons for the objection, to the Board within seven days after the club is notified of the prospective member, that person, upon payment of the admission fee, is considered to be elected to membership. If an objection has been filed with the Board, the club shall vote on this matter at its next meeting. If approved despite the objection, the proposed member is elected to membership after admission fee payment.
Section 6 — The club may elect honorary members proposed by the Board.
Thus, a member may provide a propective member name to the board in confidentiality. The board has up to 30 days to approve or reject the proposed member's membership. If accepted, then the candidate, not the member, completes the proposed membership form which is submitted to the Secretary (or the Exective Secretary if the Secretary is unavailable). The proposed candidate may complete the proposal form online by clicking on [Member Proposal] from the [Future Rotarian] dropdown menu.
Thereafter, the board decided a proposed member shall complete the following:
1. Meet with the Orientation Committee for Rotary e-club orientation (in person if local or online).
2. Meet with webmaster for website orientation (in personal if local or online)
3. Attend an in-person Monthly Meeting if local (or a regular Rotary meeting if not local)
4. Attend at least two online Weekly Meetings and submit an attendance record.
We reviewed the cancelation of our 4th Anniversary Dinner and our upcoming dinner with our District Governors Elects on Jan 23. Ernie Delfin said that the hotel was asking a $1,000 deposit for the dining room. The hotel will off a free room for the two DGEs for one evening. Membership dues of $100 was announced and invoices were sent out. Dues need to be paid by December 30. Frank Adamo mentioned the low attendance of our Weekly Meetings and discussed why it is essential to actively participate by attending these meetings. He also said it is especially important to attend our Weekly Meetings and to participate in our Facebook discussions because we are an e-club.
Ernie Delfin contacted Orangewood and we can participate in serving lunch to the children on Wednesday, December 30. Join us for a potluck lunch. Details will be available on our calendar.
Frank also brought up the availability of holding a eWaste fundraiser in January. His thinking is that many members, friends, and neighbors will recieived new electronics for Christmas and they would be more willing to donate their old electronics to a good cause. Ernie Delfin said that the Fountain Valley location he initially found may be available. Though Jan 9 and 16 would be feasible dates, we decided on January 30. This will give us a longer time to promote the event in our local neighbhoods and on social media.

Under new business, Frank Adamo offered a 2 for 1 book sale Christmas fundraiser with no out of pocket monies from our members or clubs. The two books on either side of the photo at the right—Discover your Inner Strength with Brian Tracy, Ken Blanchard and Stephen Covey and Yes You Can! with Jim Rohn and Dr. Warren Bennis—retails for $19.95 and the workbook, in the center, Smartly Track your Goals to Superior Achievements with Ease, retails for $9.95.
For $20.00 (roundind to the nearest dollar), Frank is offering a member a set of either of the two books and the workbook at no additonal cost—a savings of $9.90 and $1.80 for the sales tax, for a total savings of $11.70. In addition, the member will pay the club $20.00 only after he/she keeps the set for him/herself or he/she sells the set(s) to others. All Frank is asking is $12.00 to cover his cost—thus, the club earns $8.00 per set.
The member also has an option to keep or sell both books and one workbook for $35.00 payable to the club for a total savings of $16.65. The club then will pay Frank an additional $10.00 for his costs, while bringing in a revenue of $13.00.
In summary, for each sale of one book and a workbook, the members saves $11.70 and the club earns $8.00. For each sale of the two books and the workbook, the member receives a savings of $16.65 and the club earns $13.00. And the best thing is that neither the member nor the club has to pay out monies beforehand.
For further information on the books, please click here, Bookstore. Frank has a set of two books and two workbooks available. If interested, please give Frank a call at 714-408-9287 or email him at frank@fsadamo.com. He will be glad to deliver any quantity during the same day.
Frank also quickly mentioned sellig See's candy bars for a fundraiser. His former club in Cerritos used to sell See's candy bars to raise funds for their student exchange program with Japan. Though it is too late to consider selling candy bars for this Christmas, we could consider selling these candy bars for Valentines Day, Easter and/or next Christmas. Mor later.
Finally, Ernie Defin suggested a souvenir program to raise funds for our rescheduled anniversary and DGE reception dinner. Click on the PDF icon to the right for a copy of the Souvenir file Ernie passed out at the board meeting. Frank also suggested that we contact the Filipino Historic Club in Los Angeles and offer them a table of 10 to help cover the cost of the event.
