Welcome to the Global Kalinga e-Rotary Club for the week of Sunday, January 17 through Saturday January23, 2016. We are an Internet based Rotary Club based in Quezon City, Philippines with core groups of members in Southern California, the Philippines, and elsewhere. We serve our local and nearby communities as well as projects in the Philippines.
Inspiration
Father, it has been many years since Rotarians (with the help of others) began to eradicate polio from our earth. We have all but 2 countries left. Help Rotarians worldwide to complete our PolioPlus mission to eradicate polio from your planet once and for all.
In recent years, Rotarians and other aids have been killed by fighters in wartorn countries by those who totally misunderstood Rotary's intentions to eradicate polio in their countries. In the video below, the speaker mentioned that embattled counties laid down their weapons to allow Rotarians to vaccinate their children and end polio in their country. Please protect us and allow this to happen again so that we can complete our mission wihich began 30 years ago. Amen.
Rotary 4-Way Test
Of the things we think, say or do: 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?”
By building your team's self-esteem and encouraging them, the entire team becomes stronger.
Sing-Along Song—Rotary Polio
This is not a sing along, yet it shows a very poinent message at the end of this musical cartoon.
Fine Master
Traditionally, Rotary clubs have Fine Masters who are responsible for collecting fines/happy dollars. The clipart to your left is our e-club Fine Master. Do you have happy dollars, a birthday, an anniversary, a promotion, opening a new business, new car, new child, new grandchild, etc. Please feel free (and perhaps obligated) to click on our Rotary FineMaster button to your right.
The minimum fine is $3.00 to ensure a sufficient amount to take care of the PayPal fee. The purpose of the fines can be viewed by clicking on [View Fines/Happy Dollars] from the [Weekly Meetings] main menu
Program—Rotary International Polio Plus- From Vision to Reality
PolioPlus is Rotary International's flagship project which started in 1985 in the Philippines.
Rotary's involvement in polio eradication began in 1979 with a five-year commitment to provide and help deliver polio vaccine to six million children of the Philippines. It was the first project of the new Health, Hunger, and Humanity (3-H) program. In the next four years, similar five-year commitments were approved for Haiti, Bolivia, Morocco, Sierra Leone, and Cambodia.
In the early 1980s, Rotary began planning for the most ambitious program in its history — to immunize all of world's children against polio. The plan required collaboration with international, national, and local health agencies and took shape early in MAT Canseco’s year as RI President in 1986-87." ~ Rotary E-Club of Southeast USA and Caribbean
Though the video above was posted in 2014, it seems that this video was made, perhaps in the early 1990s.
It was a hot summer day in Springfield, IL when Frank, who was 16 at the time, asked his mother, "Can I go swimming with my friend?" Though his mother wanted to let him go, she said no. She was too afraid of sending her son to a public place like their community swimming pool because of polio. It was so contagious and she did not want her son end up in an iron lung or worse--die.
In case some senior members have forgotten, and for the younger members of Rotary, this video is a reminder of Polio in 1955--one of the most feared diseases in America and around the world at the time.
Club Business
Remember our District Governors Elect/Anniversary this Saturday. Tickets are still $50; however, the cost will be $70 at the door. For those who have not paid, you may pay online: go to our website at www.GKeRC.org, select [Donate] and select [DGE/Anniversary Dinner] or go directly to http://gkerc-d3780.wix.com/gkerc#!blank/c1t8d.
We held our regular monthly meeting on Sunday, January 10. Rillea gave the invocation, Art the Plegde, and Ernie led us in the 4-Way Test. Rillea gave the treasurer's report which will be posted under the [Monthly Agendas] on the [GKeRC Member]dropdown menu, by the end of this coming week. President Celly discussed membership applications and a re-commitment of members, especially as an e-club.
We then discussed our DGE/Anniversary dinner on Jan 23. Highlights of the discussion will be available later on [Monthly Agendas]. Finally, under that board meeting we discussed the SWOT Analysis (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threat) Report, Attendance, the Casino Trip, Outstanding Filipino-American recognition, and an E-Waste fundraiser.
Weekly meeting attendance is still weak. We have decided to have a casino trip to Pechanga Resort & Casino either on April 16 or April 30. This will be after Passover and Easter. We need a quarantee of 40 participants for the bus ride. We should have a possible confirmation for an E-Waste fundraiser in Cerritos in the next week or so.
